CONFIRMED: Brian VanGorder new DC at Auburn
Well that was certainly worth the wait! It was officially confirmed on Twitter that VanGorder has now been hired as Auburn’s new DC, he is the (now) former DC of the Atlanta Falcons. In my opinion this was a massive hire by Chizik, his name hasn’t been mentioned anywhere prior to the official naming so this was kept well quiet by those around Auburn.
Background Information – Georgia.
I’ll try to make this brief. He’s coached at a lot of places and I don’t want to list stats at everywhere he’s been.
VanGorder has had a long history of college jobs, ranging from Grand Valley State to the Georgia Bulldogs. His last DC job was at Georgia, in his first year at Georgia (2001), he was the DC and LB coach, his unit gave up 18.9 points per game, fifth in rushing defense and 17th in passing defense.
In 2002 VanGorder managed a unit that lead the SEC in scoring defense, finished fourth nationally. Georgia gave up less than 15 points that season and eventually won the Sugar Bowl.
In 2003, VanGorder’s defense ranked third nationally in scoring defense, fourth in total defense and sixth in passing defense. That year, he won the Frank Boyle’s “Assistant Coach Of The Year” award.
In 2004 (which was his final year as Georgia DC), their defense finished the season ranked eighth nationally and ninth in scoring defense.
VanGorder has put six Georgia players in the first two round of the draft, including Panthers Linebacker Thomas Davis, and ESPN hack David Pollack.
