Gus Malzahn Departs For Arkansas State: My Thoughts

It happened again, all the big news keeps breaking when I’m sleeping, I guess that balances it all out after watching many Auburn games played earlier in the day this season (yay for me!)

Gus Malzahn has officially left Auburn, and official announcement is “expected” Wednesday. It was going to happen sooner or later, when he was hired at Auburn three years ago I was anticipating his departure every offseason, I thought he may have left last year for Vandy, but he stuck it out for another year and I sincerely applaud him for that.

Malzahn has done so much for Auburn in the last three years, one thing that people seem to forget is that he came in and turned around a pathetic Tony Franklin-ised offense and made it productive one year later. In 2008 we averaged a miserable 17 ppg, and in 2009 we averaged 33 ppg, not a bad turnaround is it?

Then of course he built that incredible 2010 offense, sure Cam Newton was a big part of it, but he also had the luxury of having a stellar senior-laden offensive line, a top quality runningback, a future NFL tight end and four top notch wideouts. We averaged 41 points a game that year, and won our first ever BCS National Championship (2nd all time).

But I expect a lot of Auburn fans will remember Malzahn for his last season at Auburn, which wasn’t so good, only averaging 24 points per game, and struggled to score in 4 of our 5 losses. It wasn’t a good year offensively, and many couldn’t wait for him to leave after that, college football has become a “what have you done for me lately” thing, and it speaks no truer than with Gus Malzahn.

Good luck Gus, and thank you for everything you have done and given us. War Damn Eagle.

About Ross Collings

It's the orange and blue I love. Big fan of the Auburn football program and university. Consider myself the biggest fan of them currently living and being from outside of the United States.
